easyJet is a British low-cost airline flying short- and medium-haul routes across Europe and to North Africa and the Middle East, from a network of bases that includes London Gatwick and London Luton as well as airports in mainland Europe. It sits between the ultra-low-cost model and a traditional airline: fares are unbundled, but it generally flies into main city airports and its rules are relatively simple once you know them.

Network and bases

Like other low-cost carriers, easyJet flies point to point from its bases rather than through a single hub. Each flight is sold on its own, so if you combine two easyJet flights yourself, a missed connection is not automatically protected. Check which airport you are flying from: in London alone, easyJet operates from several airports.

Baggage allowance

According to easyJet’s official cabin bag rules:

  • Every passenger can bring one free under-seat bag of up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including handles and wheels), weighing up to 15 kg, that you can lift yourself. It must fit under the seat in front of you.
  • Large cabin bag: up to 56 x 45 x 25 cm and 15 kg, carried in the overhead locker and including Speedy Boarding. It is a paid add-on, or included for some fares and easyJet Plus members (subject to space). Adding it online is cheaper than paying at the gate.
  • Maximum of two cabin bags per person.
  • Seat note: if an Up Front or Extra Legroom seat is allocated automatically at check-in, your allowance stays at the small under-seat bag only.
  • Infants on your lap can have a separate changing bag of up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm.

Hold luggage is bought separately: see the hold luggage page for current weight options.

Check-in and deadlines

Per easyJet’s check-in page:

  • Online check-in opens 30 days before departure and closes 2 hours before.
  • Bag drop usually closes 40 minutes before departure, but earlier at some airports: 60 minutes at Amsterdam, Antalya, Lisbon, London Gatwick, Malaga, Palma and Paphos, and 50 minutes at Geneva, Zurich and Edinburgh.
  • The gate closes 30 minutes before departure.

Seats, food and onboard service

Seat selection is optional and priced by seat type (standard, Up Front, Extra Legroom). If you do not choose, a seat is allocated at check-in. Food and drinks are sold on board. There is no business class on easyJet flights.

Changes, cancellations and refunds

easyJet fares are generally not refundable if you simply decide not to travel; flights can usually be changed in Manage Bookings for a fee plus any fare difference (see easyJet’s fees and charges). If easyJet cancels or heavily delays your flight, you are offered options such as rebooking or a refund, and on routes covered by EU or UK rules you may also be entitled to care and compensation: see the EU passenger rights portal or the UK Civil Aviation Authority.

Practical tips

  • Pack to the under-seat size first. 45 x 36 x 20 cm is enough for a weekend if you choose a soft bag that fits the sizer.
  • Know your airport’s bag-drop time. The 60-minute deadline at Gatwick, Lisbon or Amsterdam catches out people who are used to 40 minutes.
  • Add bags online, not at the gate. The gate price for a large cabin bag is much higher than buying it in advance.
  • Budget the whole trip, extras included, with our Trip Budget Calculator, and use the Packing Checklist to stay within the free bag.
