Ionian beaches, Ottoman hill towns and wild mountains on the Adriatic

Albania packs a remarkable range into a small country: the turquoise coves of the Albanian Riviera, the white-walled Ottoman towns of Berat and Gjirokastra, the ancient city of Butrint and the high, empty valleys of the Accursed Mountains. Decades of isolation ended in the early 1990s, and the country now welcomes visitors with famous hospitality.

Best Time to Visit

Mayโ€“June and Septemberโ€“early October offer the best balance: the sea is warm by June and still pleasant in September, the old towns are comfortable to explore, and prices and crowds are lower than in midsummer. July and August are hot and the Riviera is at its busiest.

The northern Alps around Theth and Valbona are best for hiking from roughly June to September, when high paths are usually free of snow. Tirana works all year, with mild if rainy winters and a lively cafรฉ scene in every season.

Weather & Climate

The coast has a Mediterranean climate โ€“ hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters โ€“ while the mountainous interior is more continental, with cold winters and snow on the high ground. Rain falls mostly between late autumn and early spring. Summer heat inland, in Tirana and the river valleys, can be intense.

Entry & Visa Guidance

Albania is neither in the EU nor in the Schengen area, so its rules are separate. According to Albania's Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, nationals who can enter the Schengen area without a visa can also visit Albania visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; holders of a valid, previously used multiple-entry Schengen, US or UK visa, or a residence permit from those countries, are also exempt. Other travellers apply online through the official e-visa.al portal.

UK guidance states that your passport should be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave Albania. Days spent in Albania do not count towards the Schengen 90/180 limit, but if you continue to Greece, Croatia or Italy, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) applies when you cross into the Schengen area.

Confirm the current rules for your nationality with the official source before booking. Checked October 2026.

Getting There & Around

The main gateway is Tirana International Airport Nรซnรซ Tereza at Rinas, about 17 km from the capital, with an hourly Rinas Express bus to the city centre; see our Tirana guide. Ferries link Durrรซs and Vlorรซ with Italian ports, and Sarandรซ with the Greek island of Corfu. Cross-border buses connect Tirana with neighbouring Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo and Greece.

Passenger rail is very limited โ€“ the new Tiranaโ€“Durrรซs line has yet to open โ€“ so buses and furgons (minibuses) are the backbone of public transport. Timetables are often informal and departure points vary by destination, so ask your accommodation for the current stop.

Driving gives the most freedom but demands care: UK advice notes that road deaths are among the highest in Europe, surfaces can be poor and some mountain roads require a four-wheel drive. Drive defensively and avoid rural roads after dark.

Approximate Travel Budget

Albania is one of the most affordable countries in Europe for food, transport and guesthouses, although the Riviera and Tirana's smarter districts are catching up, especially in July and August. Family-run guesthouses in the mountains often include home-cooked meals.

The currency is the lek. Euros are sometimes accepted in tourist areas, but usually at an unfavourable rate, so pay in lek where you can. ATMs are easy to find in towns; carry cash for buses, small restaurants and rural guesthouses, as cards are not accepted everywhere.

Local Customs & Culture

Hospitality is a point of honour in Albania, bound up with the traditional notion of besa, a promise kept. Expect to be offered coffee, raki or sweets, and accept at least a little.

  • Yes and no: some Albanians shake the head for โ€œyesโ€ and nod for โ€œnoโ€ โ€“ confirm with words if unsure.
  • Religion: Muslims, Orthodox and Catholic Christians have long lived side by side; dress modestly in mosques and churches and remove shoes when entering a mosque.
  • The evening xhiro: in towns, people stroll the main street at dusk โ€“ a good moment to join local life.
  • Greetings: a handshake is standard; close acquaintances often exchange kisses on the cheek.

Food

Albanian food is simple, fresh and generous, shaped by Mediterranean, Ottoman and Balkan traditions. Look for byrek, flaky pies filled with cheese, spinach or meat; tavรซ kosi, baked lamb with rice under a yoghurt crust from Elbasan; fรซrgesรซ, peppers, tomatoes and cottage cheese cooked together; and grilled qofte meatballs. On the coast, fish and seafood are excellent, and olive oil, honey and mountain herbs appear everywhere.

Coffee is a social ritual, and raki, a fruit brandy, accompanies most celebrations. Tirana has the widest choice, from traditional grill houses to modern restaurants reworking village recipes.

Safety & Travel Advice

For visitors, crime risk is generally low, though pickpockets and bag thieves work in tourist areas, on buses and at transport hubs. The bigger risk is the road: take extra care as a driver and as a pedestrian.

Unexploded ordnance remains in some remote northern border areas near Kosovo, so do not walk on uncultivated land or stray from marked paths there. Albania is seismically active, and wildfires can occur between April and October. In the sea, follow beach warnings and lifeguard instructions. The emergency number is 112. Check your own government's travel advice before and during your trip.

Useful Phrases

Albanian is a language of its own branch of the Indo-European family; a few words go a long way.

Po / Jo: Yes / No
Mรซ falni: Excuse me / Sorry
