Privacy Policy

This page explains what FANOUSS does with data when you visit fanouss.com. It describes how the site actually works today, not how a travel site might work in general. Where something is not yet in use, it says so.

The short version

  • FANOUSS does not run analytics, and no advertising is served on the site at this time.
  • The only cookies set on a normal visit are the ones that record your own cookie choice.
  • The only personal data the site asks for is what you type into the contact form, and only if you choose to write to us.
  • Pages that show a map load that map from OpenStreetMap, which means your IP address reaches a third party.

Cookies and consent

A consent banner appears on your first visit. You can accept all categories, deny all non-essential categories, or open View preferences and choose category by category. Nothing in the optional categories runs before you have made that choice.

Four categories exist:

  • Functional: always active, and cannot be switched off. These are strictly necessary for the site to work or to remember your consent choice.
  • Preferences: would remember settings you choose. Not currently used.
  • Statistics: would measure how the site is used. Not currently used.
  • Marketing: would be used for advertising. Not currently used.

In practice, a visit to FANOUSS today sets only functional cookies. These are set by the consent plugin itself and record which categories you accepted, so that you are not asked again on every page. They contain no identifier that follows you to other websites.

Changing your mind: your choice is not permanent. The Manage consent tab at the bottom of every page reopens the banner so you can change or withdraw your consent at any time. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it, and does not affect your ability to read the site.

How the site works

FANOUSS is a WordPress site hosted on shared hosting provided by Namecheap. Like essentially every web server, the hosting platform keeps access logs. A log entry typically records the IP address of the request, the time, the page requested, the referring page and the browser’s user agent string. These logs are produced automatically as part of serving the site, are used to keep it running and secure, and are not combined with anything else to build a profile of you.

The site’s editorial content is served from its own server. Images are stored and served from fanouss.com rather than loaded from anywhere else.

Search

The search box submits your query as part of the page address. Search terms are not stored in a database and are not linked to you; they appear in the ordinary server logs described above.

Maps

Country, city and destination pages show a location map. That map is built with the Leaflet library, loaded from the unpkg content delivery network, and its map tiles come from OpenStreetMap. When such a page loads, your browser requests those files directly from those services, which means your IP address and browser details are visible to them. This is the only routine third-party request FANOUSS makes. Pages without a map make no third-party requests at all.

Language versions

FANOUSS is available in several languages. Which version you are reading is determined by the page address, not by anything stored about you.

Contact

The contact page carries a form asking for your name, email address, subject and message. What you type is sent straight on as an email to the site’s own address and is not saved in the website’s database. From there it is handled as ordinary email: kept only as long as needed to deal with what you wrote about, and used for nothing else. The form also runs a hidden anti-spam check on submission, which is not stored. Writing directly to the address published in the footer amounts to the same thing.

Accounts and comments

Visitor registration is closed, and there are no visitor accounts. Comments are not displayed or accepted on FANOUSS, so no comment data is collected.

Advertising and Google AdSense

No advertising is currently served on FANOUSS. There are no ad units, no advertising scripts and no advertising cookies on the site as of the date at the top of this page.

FANOUSS intends to apply to Google AdSense. This section describes what would change if that application is accepted and ads are switched on, so that the position is clear in advance:

  • Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on the sites it works with.
  • Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on a visitor’s prior visits to a site, including this one, and to other sites on the internet.
  • Where consent is required, advertising would fall under the Marketing category described above and would run only after you had accepted that category. Denying it would mean no advertising cookies.
  • You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time, independently of this site, through Google’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info or youronlinechoices.eu.
  • More detail on how Google uses data from sites that use its services is set out in Google’s own policy.

This page will be updated, with a new date at the top, before any advertising goes live.

Google Consent Mode

The consent system used on FANOUSS supports Google Consent Mode v2, the mechanism by which a site tells Google’s tags whether a visitor has consented to advertising and measurement. Because no Google tag is present on the site today, nothing is currently being signalled. If Google AdSense or Google Analytics is added later, those signals will be sent according to the choice you made in the consent banner, and this page will be updated to say so.

Your rights

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you rights over personal data relating to you. These include the right to ask what is held about you, to have it corrected, to have it deleted, to restrict or object to its use, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent you have given.

In practice, on this site, no personal data is stored in the website’s database at all: the contact form passes your message on as email and keeps nothing. Any of these requests can be made by writing to the email address published in the footer, and there is no charge for making one. If you believe your data has been mishandled, you also have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

The legal basis for handling a contact message is your consent, given by sending it. The legal basis for server logs is the legitimate interest in keeping the site available and secure.

Data retention

Contact messages are kept in the mailbox only as long as needed to deal with what you wrote about. Server logs are kept for the period applied by the hosting provider as part of its standard service. Consent choices are stored in your own browser and expire after twelve months, at which point you will be asked again.

Children

FANOUSS is a general-audience travel publication and is not directed at children. The site does not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes to this policy

This policy will be updated when the site changes, in particular before advertising or analytics is introduced. The date at the top of the page always reflects the most recent revision.
