๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡พ Uruguay

Colonial Colonia del Sacramento, Montevideo’s long Rambla, Atlantic beaches from Punta del Este to Cabo Polonio, and Tannat wine country.

Uruguay is a calm, easy-going country between Argentina and Brazil. Montevideo has a lively old town and a seafront promenade that runs for kilometres; Colonia del Sacramento, an hour from Buenos Aires by ferry, is a UNESCO-listed colonial town; and the Atlantic coast ranges from glamorous Punta del Este to the remote village of Cabo Polonio.

Best Time to Visit

December to March is summer and beach season, busiest in January when Argentines and Uruguayans holiday on the coast. November and April are quieter shoulder months, good for Montevideo and Colonia. Carnival in Montevideo runs for weeks from January to March. Winter (Juneโ€“August) is cool and damp.

Weather & Climate

Uruguay has a temperate, humid climate without a dry season. Summers are warm to hot; winters are cool, around 10โ€“15 ยฐC by day, with wind off the Rรญo de la Plata and the Atlantic. Weather can change quickly on the coast.

Mate is part of daily life: you will see people carrying a thermos and gourd everywhere. Meals are late, with dinner often after 9 pm. Uruguayans are relaxed and polite; a handshake or a single kiss on the cheek is a common greeting among acquaintances.

Food

Uruguay is a beef country: try an asado at a parrilla, the chivito steak sandwich, milanesa and dulce de leche desserts. Tannat is the signature red wine, with wineries near Montevideo and Carmelo.

Safety & Travel Advice

Uruguay is often considered one of the safer countries in the region, but petty crime and robberies occur in Montevideo, particularly in the old town at night and on quiet streets. Keep valuables out of sight and use taxis or apps after dark. On Atlantic beaches, swim where lifeguards are present.
