Travel Plug & Voltage Checker

Compare plug types, voltage and frequency between your home country and your destination, and see whether you need an adapter or a converter.
Check if you need a plug adapter or voltage converter.

A plug adapter only changes the shape of the plug. A voltage converter or transformer changes the voltage. Most phone, tablet and laptop chargers accept 100โ€“240V and only need an adapter.

Data: IEC World Plugs reference (iec.ch/world-plugs), compiled October 2026. Some countries use several socket types or voltages; check locally if unsure.

How it works and tips

How to read the comparison

Choose your home country and your destination. The checker shows the socket types, standard voltage and frequency for both, then gives three short answers: whether a plug adapter is likely to be needed, whether the voltage differs, and whether the frequency differs.

The adapter answer compares socket types. If at least one type is used in both countries, your plugs may fit some sockets there; if none is shared, plan on an adapter. Many countries use several socket types, so check the shape of your own plug against the list.

Adapter or converter?

A plug adapter only changes the shape of the plug so it fits the socket. It does nothing to the electricity. A voltage converter (or transformer) changes the voltage, and is only needed for devices built for a single voltage.

Look at the label or power brick of each device. โ€œINPUT 100โ€“240V ~ 50/60Hzโ€ means it works almost anywhere with just an adapter. This is true of most phone, tablet, camera and laptop chargers. A single figure such as โ€œ120Vโ€ or โ€œ230Vโ€ means the device is not dual-voltage: using it on a different voltage can damage it, so it needs a converter or should stay at home. Hair dryers, straighteners, kettles and some shavers are the usual culprits.

Data and limits

Country data is compiled from the IEC World Plugs reference. Some countries mix voltages or socket types between regions or buildings, and hotels may have different sockets; where a country uses more than one standard, the tool says so. If a country is not in the list, the checker tells you rather than guessing. Add an adapter to your Packing Checklist, and check the practical section of each country guide before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a USB charger everywhere?

Most modern USB chargers accept 100โ€“240V, so they need only an adapter. Check the input rating printed on the charger.

Does frequency matter?

Rarely for chargers. Some clocks, timers and appliances with motors can run fast, slow or hot on the other frequency.
