Layover Planner

Work out how much time a layover really leaves you once exit, travel, return and a safety buffer are taken out.
See if your layover leaves time to explore the city.
Layover length

Suggested starting value; replace it with your own estimate.

This is arithmetic on your own estimates, not live data. Immigration queues, security, baggage delivery, transit visas and boarding cut-off times vary by airport, airline and nationality. Leaving the airport may require a visa or transit permission: check with the official immigration authority and your airline. FANOUSS cannot guarantee that you can leave the airport.

How it works and tips

How the calculation works

Start with the length of the layover, then take away everything that has to happen before you are actually free and after you need to be back: getting out of the airport (immigration and, if you must collect and re-check them, your bags), the journey to where you want to go, the journey back, the time needed before departure for check-in, security and boarding, and an extra safety buffer. What remains is the time you would really have outside.

The tool pre-fills two starting values (a longer exit time for international connections and when bags must be collected, and a longer return margin for international flights) but these are placeholders, not facts about any airport. Replace them with your own estimates, ideally from the airport’s own website. Travel times to and from the city must be entered by you: the tool never assumes them.

Reading the result

Under an hour left is treated as too tight to leave the airport; one to three hours as possible but risky, so stay close and keep plans flexible; three hours or more as workable on paper. Even then, a single delay (late arrival, a long immigration queue, a slow train) can erase the margin.

Before you leave the airport

Leaving the transit area may require a visa or another entry permission depending on your nationality and the country, even for a few hours. Check the official immigration authority and your airline, and confirm the boarding cut-off time on your ticket. If your connection crosses time zones, the Time Zone Converter helps avoid clock mistakes, and the Flight Duration Calculator checks the leg times.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tool know my airport’s procedures?

No. It only does arithmetic on the numbers you enter. Queues, procedures and transport links vary by airport and time of day.

Is a separate-ticket connection different?

Usually yes: you may have to collect bags and check in again, which needs much more time. Select the baggage option and increase the return margin accordingly.
