Petra tou Romiou (Aphroditeโ€™s Rock) on the coast near Paphos, Cyprus

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡พ Cyprus

Long sunny seasons, mosaics and tombs at Paphos, painted mountain churches in Troodos and a divided capital you can cross on foot.

Cyprus is an easy Mediterranean island to travel in: English is widely spoken, distances are short and the season is long. Paphos combines beaches with major archaeological sites, Limassol has the liveliest seafront, Ayia Napa and Protaras the clearest bays, and the Troodos mountains offer cool villages and painted Byzantine churches. Nicosia, the divided capital, is the place to understand the island’s recent history.

Best Time to Visit

April to June and September to October are the best months for most travellers: warm sea in autumn, wildflowers in spring and comfortable temperatures for sightseeing. July and August are very hot inland, with temperatures often well above 35 ยฐC in Nicosia. Winter is mild on the coast, and the Troodos mountains can have snow.

Weather & Climate

Cyprus has a hot Mediterranean climate with long, dry summers and short, mild winters, when most of the rain falls. The coast stays more moderate than Nicosia and the central plain, which can be extremely hot in summer. The Troodos mountains are noticeably cooler year-round.

Entry & Visa Guidance

Cyprus is in the EU but not in the Schengen area, so days in Cyprus do not count towards Schengen limits. Visitors from the UK and many other countries can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in a 180-day period; others should check with a Cypriot embassy. You can cross between the Republic of Cyprus and the north at official crossing points with your passport, but the Republic considers entry through ports or airports in the north, such as Ercan, as illegal entry.

Getting There & Around

There are no railways. Intercity buses link Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa, and airport shuttles serve Larnaca and Paphos airports. Car hire is the easiest way to explore Troodos, the Akamas peninsula and smaller villages; traffic drives on the left. Check your rental and insurance terms before driving into the north.

Approximate Travel Budget

Prices are broadly in line with southern Europe and rise in July and August, especially for beachfront hotels. Self-catering apartments, village tavernas and buses keep costs down; a hire car is often the biggest extra expense. Compare options with the Trip Budget Calculator.

Local Customs & Culture

Dress modestly when visiting churches and monasteries, covering shoulders and knees. Cypriots are generous hosts, and meals, especially meze, are long and social. The island's division is a sensitive subject on both sides; listen and avoid political arguments.

Food

Order a meze to taste a dozen small dishes at once: halloumi, sheftalia sausages, souvla grilled meat, koupepia stuffed vine leaves and dips. Try commandaria, a sweet dessert wine from the Troodos foothills with a very long history.

Safety & Travel Advice

Cyprus has low crime levels and most visits are trouble-free. The main risks are the summer heat, wildfires and road safety. Respect the UN buffer zone: do not photograph military installations or enter restricted areas along the Green Line. Wildfires can spread fast in summer; follow local instructions.

Useful Phrases

English is widely understood across the island.

Geia sas - hello (Greek).
Efcharistรณ - thank you (Greek).
Merhaba - hello (Turkish).
TeลŸekkรผr ederim - thank you (Turkish).
