๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฆ Panama

The Panama Canal, the restored old town of Casco Viejo, Caribbean islands in Bocas del Toro and San Blas, and cloud-forest coffee country around Boquete.

Panama is small enough to combine a city break, a canal visit, mountains and two different seas in one trip. Panama City has a modern skyline beside the UNESCO-listed Casco Viejo; the Miraflores Locks are a short ride away. Beyond the capital, Bocas del Toro and the Guna Yala (San Blas) islands offer Caribbean beaches, while Boquete in the highlands is known for coffee and hiking.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from about mid-December to April is the most popular time on the Pacific side, including Panama City and Boquete. May to November is the green season, with frequent afternoon rain, lower prices and fewer visitors. The Caribbean coast, including Bocas del Toro, has rain all year, often with drier spells in Septemberโ€“October and Februaryโ€“March.

Weather & Climate

Panama is tropical, hot and humid in the lowlands throughout the year, around 25โ€“32 ยฐC. Highland areas such as Boquete and El Valle are cooler, especially at night. Rain falls mostly in afternoon storms during the wet season.

Entry & Visa Guidance

Many nationalities, including UK citizens, can visit Panama without a visa for up to three months; limits differ by nationality. Your passport should be valid for at least six months after departure. You may be asked for proof of onward travel and funds, especially when arriving by land. Check the rules for your nationality with a Panamanian embassy.

Getting There & Around

Panama City has a metro, ride-hailing apps and taxis. Domestic flights from Albrook airport reach Bocas del Toro and other regions; long-distance buses leave from the Albrook terminal. San Blas trips are usually arranged as packages including 4x4 transport and boat transfers.

Approximate Travel Budget

Panama uses the US dollar alongside the balboa, which makes prices easy to read. Panama City and island trips are more expensive than inland towns; local fondas and buses keep costs down. Plan with the Trip Budget Calculator.

Local Customs & Culture

Panamanians are generally relaxed and friendly; a greeting before any question is polite. The Guna Yala region is autonomous and governed by Guna communities, which set their own rules and fees; ask before photographing people. Dress more modestly away from the beach.

Food

Try sancocho (chicken soup with root vegetables, a national dish), arroz con pollo, patacones (fried plantain), fresh ceviche and Caribbean coconut rice. Boquete's Geisha coffee is among the most prized in the world.

Safety & Travel Advice

Most visits are trouble-free, but take normal precautions in Panama City, especially at night, and use registered taxis or apps. Several governments advise against travel to parts of the Dariรฉn region near the Colombian border. Sea conditions can be dangerous on some beaches, and boat trips should use reputable operators with life jackets.

Useful Phrases

Spanish is the national language; English is common in tourism and on the Caribbean coast.

Gracias - thank you.
Por favor - please.
ยฟCuรกnto cuesta? - how much is it?
