A Budget Traveler’s Guide to Marrakech

Where the real savings are in Marrakech, and where it's worth spending a little more.

The Koutoubia Mosque, Marrakech

Marrakech can be done well on a tight budget without sacrificing the experience. Here’s where the savings actually come from.

Sleep

Hostels and budget riads inside the medina run $12-25/night for a dorm or basic private room, often including a rooftop terrace and simple breakfast.

Eat

Jemaa el-Fnaa’s night food stalls offer full meals for $3-6. Sit-down restaurants aimed at tourists cost several times more for a comparable tagine; eating where locals eat is the single biggest budget lever.

Get Around

The medina itself requires no transport: it’s walkable and largely car-free. Petit taxis for trips to Gueliz or the airport are inexpensive if you agree on a price or insist on the meter upfront.

Activities

Many of Marrakech’s best experiences (wandering the souks, watching the square come alive at dusk, the Bahia Palace’s modest entry fee) cost little to nothing. Save your budget for one splurge, like a hammam visit or a day trip to the Atlas Mountains.

Sample Daily Budget

  • Accommodation: $15
  • Food: $12
  • Local transport: $5
  • Activities/entry fees: $8

Total: roughly $40/day, before flights.

To rework this for a different trip length or group size, the Trip Budget Calculator uses the same categories, and the Currency Converter gives an indicative dollar-to-dirham rate.
