Mountain gorillas, misty volcanoes and a calm, orderly capital
Rwanda packs volcanoes, montane rainforest, savannah and a long lakeshore into a country you can cross by road in a day. It is best known for mountain gorillas, but its spotless capital, its sobering memorials and its tea-covered hills make it far more than a single-experience destination.
Best Time to Visit
The main dry season, from late June to August, is the favourite for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking: forest trails are firmer and game viewing in Akagera is easier as animals gather near water. A shorter, drier spell around December to February is also popular.
The rainy months (roughly March to May, and again from about October to early December) bring muddier trails, lush landscapes and quieter lodges. Treks still run year-round, so a wet-season trip works if you pack good waterproofs and allow some flexibility.
Most journeys start and end in Kigali, which deserves at least a full day of its own.
Weather & Climate
Rwanda sits just south of the equator, but altitude tempers the heat: much of the country lies on high plateaus and hills, so days are mild and nights can be cool. In the dry season, Kigali's daytime temperatures typically sit in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius and rarely climb far beyond.
The volcano region in the north-west is noticeably colder and wetter, especially on the slopes where gorilla treks take place, while Akagera in the east is lower, warmer and drier. Pack layers, a fleece and a rain jacket whatever the month.

Entry & Visa Guidance
Visitors of all nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival, or apply in advance online through the government's Irembo portal. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth and Francophonie member states receive a free 30-day visa on arrival; East African Community citizens and several other listed nationalities have longer or free entry. For other nationalities, Rwanda's immigration service states a fee of US$50 single entry or US$70 multiple entry (fees checked October 2026). The East Africa Tourist Visa (US$100, checked October 2026) covers Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda on one multiple-entry visa.
Your passport should be valid for at least six months from arrival, with a blank page. A yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with a risk of transmission.
Ebola measures: following the Ebola outbreak in neighbouring DR Congo, a Rwandan government notice of May 2026 states that foreign nationals who have travelled to or through the DRC in the previous 30 days will be refused entry, and screening is in place at Kigali International Airport. These measures can change quickly.
Confirm the current rules for your nationality with the official source before booking. Checked October 2026.
Getting There & Around
Almost all international visitors fly into Kigali International Airport, east of the city centre; the national carrier, RwandAir, connects Kigali with many African hubs and some European and Gulf cities. From Kigali, distances are short: Musanze and the gorilla trailheads, Lake Kivu and Akagera are all reachable by road within a few hours.
Shared minibuses and coaches leave from Nyabugogo bus station in Kigali to every major town, and roads between main towns are generally paved. Motorbike taxis (moto) are everywhere and drivers carry a spare helmet for the passenger, but they are involved in many accidents, so use them with care. Most visitors on a gorilla or safari trip hire a car with a driver-guide, which is simpler than self-driving; avoid driving outside towns after dark.
Approximate Travel Budget
Rwanda is not a budget destination once wildlife is involved. The single biggest cost for most travellers is the gorilla trekking permit, listed by Visit Rwanda at US$1,500 per person (checked October 2026); park fees for Nyungwe and Akagera are lower but still significant, and lodges near the parks range from simple guesthouses to some of Africa's most expensive retreats.
Day-to-day costs in Kigali are moderate: local restaurants, buses and moto rides are inexpensive, while international-style hotels and restaurants charge prices closer to European levels. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is free to enter. Cards work in larger hotels and supermarkets, but carry Rwandan francs for markets, transport and smaller towns; if you bring US dollars, they should be recent notes in good condition.
Local Customs & Culture
Umuganda, the national community-work morning, takes place on the last Saturday of each month; most services close from around 7am to 11am, and traffic is restricted. Plan airport transfers and sightseeing around it.
Plastic bags have been banned since 2008 and will be confiscated on arrival. Importing or possessing vapes and e-cigarettes is illegal, and photographing government buildings or flying a drone without a permit can lead to fines or worse. Greetings matter: a handshake and a few words of Kinyarwanda go a long way. The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi is part of living memory; at memorials, dress modestly, speak quietly and follow guidance on photography. Every April, the national commemoration period (Kwibuka) is a time of mourning, so expect a more subdued atmosphere.
Food
Rwandan food is simple, filling and built on what the hills produce: beans, plantains (ibitoke), sweet potatoes, cassava and leafy greens. Isombe, pounded cassava leaves often cooked with peanut or aubergine, is a staple, and lunchtime buffets in local restaurants are a good way to try several dishes at once.
Goat or beef brochettes grilled over charcoal are a classic evening snack, often with chips or grilled plantain, and small fried fish called sambaza come from Lake Kivu. Rwanda grows excellent coffee and tea; many cafรฉs in Kigali serve single-origin local beans.
Safety & Travel Advice
Rwanda is generally orderly and Kigali feels safe to walk by day, but petty theft, bag-snatching and burglary do occur. Avoid walking alone late at night, keep valuables out of sight and use hotel safes.
The UK government advises against all but essential travel to the parts of Rusizi District within 10 km of the DR Congo border, including Kamembe Airport and Rwandan islands in Lake Kivu in that area; the US government advises its citizens not to travel within 10 km of the DRC border. Rwanda has also introduced Ebola prevention measures at its borders. Check your own government's travel advice before and during your trip.
Road travel is the main everyday risk: drive defensively, avoid night journeys and wear a helmet on motorbike taxis. Medical facilities outside Kigali are limited, so take out comprehensive travel insurance.
