Wizz Air is a Hungarian ultra-low-cost airline headquartered in Budapest. It flies an all-Airbus fleet across Europe, with a particularly strong network in Central and Eastern Europe and routes to the Middle East. Fares are unbundled: a seat and one small bag are included, and everything else is an extra.

Network and bases

Wizz Air flies point to point from bases across Europe, so each flight is sold separately and connections you build yourself are not protected. Many routes use secondary airports, so check exactly where you land and how you will get into town.

Baggage allowance

From Wizz Air’s official baggage allowance page:

  • Free carry-on bag for every passenger: up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm and 10 kg, which must fit under the seat in front (a small backpack, handbag or laptop bag).
  • Trolley bag: up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 10 kg in the overhead locker, available only by adding WIZZ Priority, which allows two cabin items in total.
  • Checked bags are paid extras of 10, 20, 26 or 32 kg, up to six per passenger.
  • Bag sizes exclude handles and wheels, but wheels may add no more than 5 cm.

Bags can be added in a fare bundle (such as WIZZ GO or WIZZ PLUS), when booking, later in your WIZZ Account, or at the airport, where extra fees apply.

Check-in and deadlines

From Wizz Air’s check-in times page:

  • Online check-in opens 30 days before departure if you bought a seat, or 24 hours before if you did not, and closes 3 hours before departure, earlier than most airlines.
  • Airport check-in and bag drop normally open 2 hours before and close 40 minutes before departure, but many airports differ: for example, London Gatwick, London Luton, Rome Fiumicino and Istanbul open 180 minutes and close 60 minutes before departure.
  • At London Gatwick, passengers who checked in online can use the automated bag drops in the South Terminal, Zone J.

Seats, food and onboard service

Seat selection is paid; if you do not buy a seat, one is allocated when you check in. Food and drinks are sold on board.

Changes, cancellations and refunds

Basic fares are restrictive; changes are possible for a fee through your WIZZ Account. Refund and compensation requests for disrupted flights go through the claim forms in Wizz Air’s delay, cancellation and refund help section. On flights covered by EU or UK rules, see also the EU passenger rights portal.

Practical tips

  • Remember the 3-hour online check-in cut-off. It is easy to miss if you are used to other airlines.
  • Measure the free bag: 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and it really must fit under the seat.
