Combining a city, mountains, and a desert or coast in one trip means packing for three different climates without overpacking. Here’s the layering approach that actually works.
The Core Idea: Layers, Not Outfits
Pack a small number of versatile layers rather than complete outfits for each place: a base layer, a mid layer for warmth, and a weatherproof outer layer cover most climate combinations.
The Base List
- Moisture-wicking base layers (2-3)
- One warm mid layer (fleece or light down)
- A packable rain shell
- Comfortable walking shoes plus one pair of sandals
- A scarf or buff (sun/dust/warmth, triple duty)
Adjust for Desert or Beach Add-Ons
Add sunscreen, a wide-brim hat, and lightweight long sleeves for sun protection in desert or beach destinations; counterintuitively, more coverage often keeps you cooler than going sleeveless in strong sun.
Adjust for Mountains or Cold Add-Ons
Add thermal layers, gloves, and a warmer hat: desert and mountain nights both get cold even when days are hot.
